- version of Undelete.
-
-
- PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
- =================================================
-
- This version of Undelete is supported on Intel x86 platforms
- (or their equivalent) running Windows 2000. It is also
- supported on Intel x86 platforms running Windows NT 4.0.
-
- Undelete is available in two versions: a Server version and a
- Workstation version. The Server version of Undelete can be
- installed on Windows 2000 Server or Professional systems, as
- well as Windows NT 4.0 Server and Workstation systems. The
- Workstation version of Undelete can only be installed on
- Windows 2000 Professional and Windows NT Workstation systems.
-
- With the Workstation version you can recover and undelete files on
- a local Workstation, while with the Server version you can recover
- and undelete files and directory folders on your local machine as
- well as on remote computers on your network.
-
-

-

- section later in this file for further instructions about

-
-

-
-
- KNOWN RESTRICTIONS/LIMITATIONS IN THIS RELEASE
- ==============================================
-
- 1. Undelete V2.0 will not communicate with previous versions of
- Undelete.
-
- 2. Undelete V2.0 will not upgrade V1.2. V1.2 should be
- uninstalled before installing V2.0. Future releases of
- V2.0 will upgrade V1.2 when appropriate.
-
- 3. There is no command line interface support in this release.
-
- 4. Emergency Undelete is not included in this release.
-
- 5. Drag and drop onto the desktop icon is not yet supported.
-
- 6. When connecting from Undelete on a Windows 2000 system to
- another system it is possible to get two UdBin processes
- running, which may cause problems with the product. This
- problem is under investigation. Until it is resolved, it is
- recommended that testers not attempt to connect from a Windows
- 2000 machine to another machine if that other machine already
- has the Undelete GUI up.
-
- 7. On completely full disk volumes, when you attempt to delete
- a file an error message may be displayed stating that you
- do not have enough free space to delete the file. In this
- case, you must disable the Recovery Bin (and/or remove some
- files from it) in order to proceed with further file
- deletions.
-
- 8. An access violation can occur if you search for a file on an
- NTFS volume (using the Search feature) in the Recovery Bin
- with a path name exceeding 260 characters.
-
- 9. If you are running Undelete on a system that is also running
- Norton AntiVirus, Executive Software recommends excluding the
- temporary folders used by Norton AntiVirus from being saved
- into the Recovery Bin. This prevents the Recovery Bin from
- filling with unnecessary temporary files.
-
- 10. Emptying the Recovery Bin may take up to several minutes,
- depending on how many files are in the Recovery Bin. Also,
- note that when you empty the Recovery Bin from the main
- Undelete interface, the the display is cleared immediately,
- although the files are being removed from the Recovery Bin
- at a slower rate than it appears. The Recovery Bin desktop
- icon changes when the Recovery Bin has actually been emptied.
-
-
- THIRD PARTY INCOMPATIBILITY LIST
- ================================
-
- Undelete is incompatible with the following third party software
- applications:
-
- 1. Norton Protect. Undelete and Norton Protect perform similar
- activities that are not compatible.
-
- 2. QuarterDeck Cleansweep. Undelete is incompatible with
- Cleansweep.
-
- 3. One site reported that a product named Virtual Address does
- not function when Undelete is installed. This has not been
- independently confirmed.
-
- 4. Undelete 2.0 is not compatible with the Hierarchical Storage
- Management software from Veritas Corporation (which is
- included in the Windows 2000 Server versions).
-
-
- REQUIRED PRIVILEGES
- ===================
-
- You must be a member of the Administrators Group to install
- Undelete and to undelete files directly from the disk.
-
- Members of the Users Group can recover files from the Recovery
- Bin. However, they must have sufficient file permissions and
- ownership to recover a file from the Recovery Bin.
-
-
- INSTALLING UNDELETE
- ===================
-
- Note that you must uninstall any previous version of
- Undelete before installing this version. See the
- "Uninstalling Undelete" section later in this file
- for further instructions about uninstalling Undelete.
-
- After downloading the compressed self-extracting executable
- file into a temporary directory on your Windows 2000 system,
- follow these steps while logged on to an account that is a
- member of the Administrators Group:
-
- 1. From Windows NT Explorer or File Manager, double click the
- file you downloaded in the temporary directory.
-
- 2. After a short time of unzipping the compressed file, the
- Undelete Setup Wizard is displayed. Click "Next" as
- appropriate.
-
- 3. Next, the Executive Software License Agreement is displayed.
- You must accept the License Agreement to continue the
- installation of Undelete.
-
- 4. Next, you are given the choice of performing a "Complete"
- or a "Custom" installation. Both methods install the same
- files, but the "Custom" option allows you to specify
- the directory folder where Undelete will be installed.
-
- A. If you choose the "Complete" option, click "Next", then
- "Install" to continue.
-
- B. If you choose the "Custom" option, click "Next", then
- "Change" to specify a different disk volume and/or
- directory folder. As an option, you can also click
- "Disk Usage" to see the available free space on the
- volumes on your computer. After making any desired
- changes, click "Install" to continue.
-
- 5. If a previous version of Undelete has been installed on
- your computer, you are offered the option to convert your
- Exclusion List entries into the version 2.0 format.
-
- 6. If a previous version of Undelete has been installed on
- your computer, you are next offered the option to convert
- any existing Recovery Bin files into the version 2.0
- format. If you choose not to convert the earlier Recovery
- Bin files, you will then be given an option to delete the
- old Recovery Bin information.
-
- 7. Next, the installation checks for an existing installation
- of Undelete and offers you the option to remove the earlier
- installation. If you choose to remove the earlier version,
- you are given the option to save any previous settings.
-
- 8. After a few moments of copying files, the installation is
- complete. Click "Finish" after the file copying process
- has finished.
-
- 9. After the installation is complete, you will be prompted
- to restart your computer. You must restart your computer
- to start the Undelete Service and device driver.
-
